LOCATION

Camp Bob Marshall is located in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills, six miles east of Custer on the northeast shore of Bismarck Lake. Bob Marshall is on the west side of Custer State Park and close to Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, Harney Peak, Sylvan Lake, the Needles, Crazy Horse Monument, and Jewel Cave and Wind Cave National Parks. The 78-acre site is operated by the Western Dakota 4-H Camp Association.

PATRONAGE

Camp Bob Marshall hosts 4-H youth and their leaders with three-day sessions each week in June, after which other youth and adult groups may rent the facilities for conference and camping programs from May through November. Bob Marshall hosts the South Dakota Wildlife Federation youth camp annually during the first week of June, and is available for church conferences, and other youth and adult camps in July and August. Facilities are available on weekends in June, July and August for special youth retreats and family reunions, but priority is given to youth groups. The camp is usually available anytime in September through November for groups to rent.

The 4-H camping program at Bob Marshall is intended to provide an opportunity for youth to make new friends, learn to get along with others, understand and appreciate nature, and have fun. Trout fishing, boating and swimming on Bismarck Lake, and hiking are key recreational activities. Horseback riding is available four miles away at Bluebell Lodge and additional trout fishing is available at Stockade Lake, Legion Lake, Center Lake, Sylvan Lake, and other Black Hills lakes and streams. Equipment is provided for volleyball, Softball, basketball, tetherball, horseshoes and canoeing. Bob Marshallís setting, the picturesque ponderosa pine forest of the southern Black Hills intermingled with aspen and spruce, is an ideal area for bird watching, nature and rock studies.

FACILITIES

Bob Marshallís redwood-stained, rough-sided structures with their wood-shingled roofs create a rustic camp mood. Twelve resident cabins, each with a capacity for 14 campers, provide accommodations for about 168. All cabins are equipped with electric lights and wood-burning stoves. The bathhouse offers hot showers.

The campís 200-capacity auditorium/recreational hall has a stage, conference room, piano and fireplace. A spacious craft and classroom building includes ample room for indoor games and activities. The classroom building also houses the camp store where snacks and souvenirs are available to all campers.

Wholesome, well-balanced meals are planned by a trained nutritionist and prepared by an experienced cook during the summer months. Contract catering is also available. The kitchen is furnished with modern cooking equipment and storage facilities. Special meats and dietary needs can be arranged by notifying the camp management. Food and lodging prices are maintained at a minimum. A ceremonial center with campfire and outdoor cooking area surrounded by bench-space for 200, provides an inspirational site for outdoor gatherings.

Water Test Drinking water is tested and approved monthly. Hospital facilities are just six miles away in Custer. Insurance is the responsibility of the camping group. (Not responsible for accidents.)

ADMINISTRATION

Camp Bob Marshall is administered by the Western Dakota 4-H Camp Association in cooperation with the Black Hills National Forest Service. A full-time camp manager and kitchen staff manage the facilities from June through November A full-time caretaker is in charge of grounds, buildings, and physical comforts.
